Our Story and Mission

Floresa was founded in 2014 with a clear and uncompromising belief: that communities pushed to the margins of power are equally entitled to journalism that is serious, truthful, and accountable to the public. Distance from the center must never mean exclusion from the truth.

Based in Labuan Bajo on Indonesia's Flores Island, we emerged and grew within the shifting realities of East Nusa Tenggara—at a time when Indonesia, after decentralization, entered a new phase of development targeting its eastern regions. What arrived under the banner of progress brought opportunity, but also deep and unresolved injustice.

Across the region, large‑scale development has intensified the extraction of natural resources, sidelined Indigenous rights, damaged forests and seas, and transformed protected conservation areas into zones of tourism and mining capital. These are not side effects. They are structural consequences—and they demand scrutiny.

Ourreports on what is routinely ignored: Indigenous land rights, violence against women, corruption at the local level, the human cost of infrastructure projects, and environmental destruction in Indonesia’s archipelagic frontiers.

Our journalism is an act of resistance against indifference. It is a commitment to democratic accountability and to a vision of development that is just, inclusive, and grounded in dignity.

We do this not because these issues are popular, but precisely because they are not. We report because silence enables abuse, because neglect breeds impunity, and because power without oversight corrodes democracy.

We believe that journalism is more than the delivery of information. Journalism is a means to amplify voices that are too often ignored, to demand accountability, and to safeguard the health of the public sphere.

The Independence We Defend

Remaining an independent and critical media organization is not a slogan—it is a conscious political and ethical choice we have upheld for more than a decade.

We recognize that independence comes at a financial cost. Yet we refuse to rely on corporate advertising models that can be withdrawn at will, because we understand this clearly: financial dependence inevitably leads to editorial compromise.

Instead, we ground our sustainability in public trust. Our work is supported by readers, collaborations with fellow journalists and media organizations, reporting fellowships, and program partnerships with institutions that share our values and our commitment to justice.

We stand alongside civil society organizations and collective movements, including Yayasan Kurawal, Sunspirit for Justice and Peace, and Rumah Baca Aksara.

We also collaborate across newsrooms—working with media such as Project Multatuli, Tempo, Konde, and Forbidden Stories—because truth is stronger when defended collectively.

Some of our investigations are supported by reporting fellowships from the Earth Journalism Network, a global network of environmental journalists, and other aligned institutions.

Our independence is neither accidental nor negotiable. It is a position we occupy deliberately—because journalism that serves the public must never be beholden to power, capital, or fear.

We operate under PT Floresa Media Utama and are officially registered as a member of the Indonesian Online Media Association (AMSI), East Nusa Tenggara chapter, under membership number: 1/Wil-25/Nusa Tenggara Timur/AMSI/III/2023. We are also one of the initiators and members of the Alternative Media Coalition.
